The Senate voted Sunday afternoon to block legislation crafted by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) to raise the debt limit by $2.4 trillion.

Reid and other Democratic leaders worked intently to persuade centrist Republicans to support the plan but fell short.

The vote to end a filibuster failed 50 to 49. Only Sen. Scott Brown, a centrist Republican from Massachusetts, defied the GOP leadership.

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) voted against Reid’s plan, as did Reid himself in a procedural move that will allow him to bring it back to the floor.

Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) was the only senator to miss the vote.

Now Democratic senators are waiting for Reid to call a special caucus meeting with senior administration officials to hear about the status of negotiations with GOP leaders. A meeting had been announced for 2 p.m. but it was postponed at the last moment.

Lawmakers say they have been told the president and GOP leaders are closing in on a deal and expect one as soon as this afternoon.

Reid told colleagues shortly after noon that he is cautiously optimistic of a deal.

“We are close to an agreement with Republican leaders,” he said. “[A]fter speaking to Republican leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) this morning, we are cautiously optimists.”

Senators will wait for a bipartisan deal to be finalized and then will begin work on advancing it to the House.

If any senator decides to object and drag out proceedings, Congress will not make the Aug. 2 deadline set by Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner.

A Democratic aide said if conservatives filibuster the deal, the soonest it could pass the Senate would be a Wednesday.

A short-term stopgap measure may be necessary to allow the government to pay its bills after Aug. 2. But such a Band Aid would need to receive unanimous consent to pass by Tuesday.

Who would ever thought it would be possible that Progressive Socialist and Liberal Democrat Senator Barbara Boxer could lose her Senate seat. Then again, who would have thought that Scott Brown would have won the seat held by Ted Kennedy. Boxer and the Democrat Party are fast losing the support and confidence of the American people. With unemployment in liberal California at nearly 13%, it is no surprise that Boxer is in for a tough fight. It’s about time we elect businessmen and women to the Congress and stop electing lawyers- Entrepreneurs know how to create jobs, not lawyers.

From Newsmax.com:

A Democrat and a woman, Helen Sargent is the kind of voter that Sen. Barbara Boxer needs this year in her drive for a fourth term in Washington.

So, what does Sargent think of taxes and the U.S. debt? Too high.

President Barack Obama, Boxer’s fellow Democrat? Very disappointing.

The Democratic Party? Needs new faces.

Boxer “has been there too long,” says Sargent, a 65-year-old travel agent from a leafy Los Angeles suburb that Boxer carried by a mere 56 votes in 2004. “All politicians have a shelf life.”

Those are troubling words for Boxer, who won in a 20-point landslide six years ago, but now faces the fight of her political career. The nation’s economic woes — particularly intense in hard-hit California — and a difficult electoral year for Democrats have created a rough challenge for the 69-year-old liberal lawmaker.

In a clear sign of her difficulties, President Barack Obama heads to Los Angeles on Monday to help raise money for Boxer, who is running about even with several potential Republican challengers, an alarming sign in the Democratic-leaning state.

The proceeds from twin fundraisers will be split between Boxer and the Democratic National Committee; ticket prices range from $100 for a reception to $17,600 for dinner with the president.

Voter frustration and outright anger is widespread in California, where the 12.6 percent unemployment rate tops the national average, home foreclosures have hit record highs and a budget crunch has led to deep cuts in the state’s college system.

I think we are finally seeing a change in the Republican Party where issues like gay marriage and abortion, while important, will no longer be the platform that Republicans run on. In my opinion, fiscal and national security issues are what will define Republicans. Scott Brown’s campaign is an example of that.

In the article below, Cindy McCain shows her support for gay marriage.

From the Washington Post:

Mrs. McCain appears with silver duct tape across her mouth and “NOH8″ written on one cheek in a photo posted Wednesday to the Web site of NOH8, a gay rights group opposed to Proposition 8. The ballot measure passed by California voters in 2008 bans same-sex marriage.

The McCains’ daughter Meghan, who has been outspoken in her support for gay rights, has also endorsed NOH8. She appears with silver duct tape across her mouth and “NOH8″ on a cheek in a photo on her Twitter site.

Cindy McCain contacted NOH8 and offered to pose for the photo endorsement, the Web site said.

John McCain’s office said in a statement that the Arizona senator respects the views of members of his family but remains opposed to gay marriage.

“Sen. McCain believes the sanctity of marriage is only defined as between one man and one woman,” the statement said.

John McCain backed an Arizona ballot measure passed by voters in 2008 that defined marriage as between one man and one woman.

The NOH8 Web site praised Cindy McCain’s willingness to publicly endorse a cause that is unpopular within the Republican Party.

“The McCains are one of the most well-known Republican families in recent history, and for Mrs. McCain to have reached out to us to offer her support truly means a lot,” the site says. Continued…

In an amazing election and a blow to the liberal agenda of President Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid, Scott Brown has won the special election for US Senate in Massachusetts. Congratulations Senator Scott Brown for a stunning election win. Thank you Massachusetts for saving the Republic.

Democrats are already throwing Martha Coakley under the bus calling her campaign political malpractice as they look to shift blame away from Barack Obama and their liberal agenda.

What Democrats fail to realize is that voters in Massachusetts understand that the Obama administration and the Democrats have invested more time in passing a health-care program that a majority don’t want and virtually no time getting the economy going. Republicans, like myself, know that this was no accident. Democrats were counting on people losing their jobs and thus their health-care coverage to bolster support for government health-care. That didn’t happen and now they are suffering the consequences of that gamble. Should Republican Scott Brown win, you can expect moderate and conservative Democrats to run for cover and abandon health-care. I would also expect Obama to move to the center and to focus on the economy. If Obama moves to the center, he will enrage his liberal base and we could see a depressed and deflated Democrat party. In 30 minutes we should be getting the results.

_____________

Here comes the Democrat spin. It’s the same spin you heard when they lost the Virgina and New Jersey gubernatorial races– the Democrat was a weak candidate. Now, that spin may have worked if Martha Coakley was winning by 10 points versus the normal 30 point Democrat lead that’s expected in the very liberal state of Massachusetts, but she’s actually trailing her Republican rival by as much as 10 points. Yes, 10 POINTS!!! Yes, in a state where registered Democrats outnumber Republican 3 to 1!!! Come tomorrow, even if Brown loses by 5 points , the fact that Brown came within single digits of winning will be amazing. Let’s be honest, Republicans have to win by at least 5 points just to overcome the ubiquitous cheating that Democrats are so well-known for. January 19, 2010 could very well be the second revolution that Massachusetts hosts.

What I’ve found so humorous during this Senate campaign is the desperation of Democrats and how they attempt to inject Sarah Palin’s and George Bush’s name in everything. What they haven’t realized is that most of American people are on to their game and aren’t buying it. Those “scare” tactics, if you will, just aren’t working. Here’s John Kerry:

“I’m no stranger to hard fought campaigns, but what we’ve seen in the past few days is way over the line and reminiscent of the dangerous atmosphere of Sarah Palin’s 2008 campaign rallies. This is not how democracy works in Massachusetts,” Kerry said this afternoon in a statement.

Desperate! But the liberal Senator didn’t stop there:

“Scott Brown needs to speak up and get his out of state tea party supporters under control. In Massachusetts, we fight hard and win elections on the issues and on our differences, not with bullying and threats,” Kerry said.

Oh really Senator Kerry, Democrats don’t bully? Does the liberal Senator think we’re stupid or simply forgetful. Let’s watch some video as an example of Democrat intimidation, bullying, and threats.

That’s a video of members of the Black Panthers with clubs in their hands intimidating voters outside of a polling booth during the 2008 presidential election. Of course, Senator Kerry doesn’t have a problem with that. It wouldn’t surprise me if tomorrow we see similar voter suppression on the part of Democrats– lying, cheating, manipulating facts, stuffing ballots boxes, destroying military ballots, multiple voting, filling absentee ballots out for the mentally handicap and elderly… it’s what these people do. For them, it’s not about the democratic process, it’s about winning to cement government control and power. In Massachusetts, the people are revolting. Let’s just hope there’s enough of them to overcome the widespread fraud.

Today, I again contributed to the Senatorial campaign of Massachusetts State Senator Scott Brown. He is our hope in stopping the socialist agenda of Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and Barack Obama. Over the past year we have seen the “change” they have championed; higher unemployment, runaway deficit spending, special interest paybacks, secret back door deals, declines in national security, drop in personal income, auto jobs shipped overseas, higher taxes, lower pay… we’re tired of the “change” that they’ve promised and we need Scott Brown in the US Senate to be the 41 vote to stop this madness. The Democrats have been in charge of Congress for 36 months and it’s been 36 months too long. Scott Brown will bring us 1 vote closer to ending their “change”.
